You wouldn’t trust your – or your child’s – smile to just anyone. That’s why it’s important to know your orthodontist’s background and qualifications. Here are ten things you should know about your orthodontist.

  1. What experience do you have?

Orthodontics is a dental specialty requiring several additional years of training. While many dentists provide some orthodontic treatments, only an orthodontist is trained to correct teeth, bites and align jaw bones and facial imbalance. Before you select an orthodontist, make sure he or she belongs to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). This ensures he or she has received the critical training and experience that qualifies a specialist. Additionally, you may want to ask for before and after photos from patients with issues like yours. This will allow you to see your orthodontist’s experience in action.

  1. How long will my appointment take?

We get it. It’s difficult to make time for medical appointments, and even worse to wait around for your doctor to see you. At Mountain West, we know the last thig you want to do is hang out in our waiting room. Our staff is dedicated to efficiency, and we make a point to get our patients out of the reception area as quickly as possible. Because appointment times vary depending on the nature of your visit, please allow anywhere from 45 minutes to 90 minutes for your appointment.

  1. Will I get the same treatment everywhere?

You might think every orthodontic case is the same, but since no two mouths are alike, every orthodontic treatment is different. That’s why we pride ourselves on a completely personal, customized treatment plan for each patient who enters our offices. We’re dedicated to providing each patient with individual attention from Dr. Tomlin every time they come in for an appointment. This ensures we offer you a treatment plan tailored to your mouth – not to every mouth.

  1. What ages do you treat?

The short answer: all of them! That said, the American Academy of Orthodontists recommends children be evaluated for orthodontic treatment around age seven. We’re happy to see patients of all ages, from children to adolescents to adults, and we’re skilled in creating treatment plans specific every age and situation. Additionally, we automatically enroll any pediatric patients into our Growth Guidance Program, which means we’ll evaluate your child for potential issues every time we see him or her.

  1. Do you offer adult orthodontic treatments?

Yes! We believe it’s never too late to achieve the healthy, beautiful smile you’ve always wanted. In fact, about 30 percent of Mountain West Orthodontic patients are adults. We have several treatment options for adults, including clear aligners (Invisalign) and traditional braces. You might be surprised to learn how discreet and comfortable orthodontic treatment can be. Remember, a straight smile is a healthy smile, so now’s the time to achieve both!

  1. What’s your reputation in the community?

In today’s world, you can learn a lot about a potential medical provider from a simple Google search. Try this for Mountain West Dental and you’ll see that our patients have consistently given us positive reviews and five-star ratings.

  1. What happens after treatment?

We want your orthodontic treatment to keep you smiling for a lifetime. That’s why your follow-up appointments are just as important as those during your treatment. At Mountain West, all of our treatment plans include maintenance, typically through retainers, to keep your smile straight and healthy.

  1. Do you provide emergency services?

While Mountain West’s formal business hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, should you have an emergency on the weekend, you simply need to call. We’ll make sure you get the care you need!

  1. How do you contribute to the community?

Aside from giving community members healthier, more attractive smiles, we at Mountain West also believe in giving back. Although our doctors keep their schedules full, with daily appointment schedules, continuing education and personal family time, they still find time for the community. Whether it’s sponsoring a local race, volunteering at a charitable event or simply offering donations to local organizations, Dr. Allison Tomlin and Dr. Keaton Tomlin always keep the community in which they live and work at the forefront of their charitable efforts.

  1. What financing options are available?

We understand that financing dental and orthodontic services can be a strain on your family. That’s why it’s important to know your options prior to your first visit. Mountain West accepts all major insurance plans. If you do not have dental insurance (or even if you do), we also offer flexible payment options, including financing plans. Additionally, we accept all major credit cards for your convenience. We’re happy to consult with you regarding the financial details of your treatment plan at any time; just give us a call to schedule a consultation.

We believe everyone should enjoy a healthy, beautiful smile, and we’re committed to helping you achieve it.
